Services

In addition to shelter and meals we provide numerous programs and services to help the women gain life skills to help them be independent and prevent future chronic homelessness.
Advocacy and Referral
Assistance for residents in gaining access to other private and state services and programs, based on each individual’s needs.
Budget and Money Management
As homelessness is primarily an economic problem, the staff helps residents develop budget and payment plans for day-to-day expenses and repayment of outstanding debt. As there is no charge to stay at Lucy's Hearth, we require that each resident save 50% of their income in preparation for permanent housing.
On-Site GED Classes
A qualified teacher is at the shelter two days a week for GED classes, which are required for all residents who have not completed a high school education.
Parenting Classes
These weekly classes are designed to help single mothers gain effective parenting skills and address issues relating to homeless children and shelter life. There is emphasis on appropriate discipline and nurturing for the prevention of abuse and neglect. Follow-up by staff helps to reinforce this.
Counseling
A professional counselor meets weekly with each mother, as well as providing emergency assistance and evaluation when needed.
Summer Program for Children
A daily program of activities and field trips is designed to provide enriching experiential learning as well as recreation. The program addresses the educational and emotional needs of homeless children in order to better prepare them for the coming school year.
After-School Programs for Children
Volunteers provide activities, help with homework, and outside play for children in the after school hours.
Transitional Housing Program
Through a grant from HUD, the Hearth has 3 transitional apartments for families who have completed a stay at the shelter and are now working toward better employment opportunities through training and/or further education.
Outreach to Former Residents
After a family moves into permanent housing, the Hearth maintains contact through home visits, to provide continued support and encouragement, as well as help with budgets, food, the holidays, and crisis intervention.
Nutrition and Health Workshops
Student nurses from local universities provide workshops on women’s health issue, as well as information on children’s health and nutrition.
Housing Workshops
These meetings provide information on tenant landlord relations, responsibilities as a tenant, and other housing issues.
