Lucy’s Hearth is able to maintain a frugal budget while providing a comprehensive program due to the generosity of many volunteers. In the 19 years the hearth has been in operation, volunteers have given over 150,000 hours of service.
Our biggest needs right now are the following:
Shift volunteers
We need mature, responsible and dependable volunteers to cover the evening shift from 5:00 to 10:00. During these hours, we ask that volunteers answer the phones and doors, check to make sure chores are being done on schedule, children are being put to bed on time, and to communicate with day staff through entries in our daily log. In exchange, we provide a home-cooked dinner and some quiet time to catch up on homework. Many of our volunteers enjoy spending time talking with the mothers and/or playing or reading with the kids. It is a great opportunity to get some social services experience or just to gain insight into the homeless crisis in our area.
GED class childcare
We offer on-site GED classes to the mothers who have not earned a high school diploma. During these classes, children who are not old enough to attend school can be distractions to their moms. We would love to have a dependable babysitter on site during these classes. GED meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Mentor/tutor/friend
We have several school-age children residing in the shelter. They often need help with their homework or just someone to hang out with in the afternoons. Positive role models for them will hopefully boost their self-esteem, confidence, and make them want to succeed in school. Children are generally home from school after 3:30 and get ready for bed at 7:30, so anytime in between would be great!
